This family focused event welcomes visitors to celebrate children on Kodomo no Hi, or Children’s Day. We welcome families to games, streamers, and to turn on the waterfall in the Osaka Garden for the season each year!Carp/koi streamer-like kites made of cloth, or koinobori, are an iconic symbol of this holiday. When the wind blows through the koinobori, it makes it look like the fish is swimming. The day before Kodomo no Hi, families raise carp flags to represent the members of the household. The carp flags come in different colors, with each one representing a different family member. Black carps usually represent the father, red or pink the mother, and other colors—like blue, green, and orange—represent each child of a family.A carp/koi symbolizes determination, strength, and success of a child. This nods to carp needing to swim upstream, against the current, to thrive. It syncs with the myth that if a carp has the endurance to swim all the way upstream, it may transform and emerge as a dragon!
We also encourage guests to stop by the Osaka Garden for a slow stroll or guided tour. Note that capacity is limited to 50 guests at a time. This is on a first come, first served, basis.
No dogs, food, or photography is permitted in the Osaka Garden. Thank you for helping us be great stewards of this historic gem in Chicago! This event is free and accessible to all, capacity permitting.
We recommend parking in the Hayes Lot south of the garden, or on Stony Island.
